Kirkwood Ski Team · For Reno, Carson City, Minden, and Gardnerville families

Over Carson Pass: KSEF from Reno, Carson City, and the Carson Valley

From the Nevada side, Kirkwood is one road from home: US-395 to Highway 88, up through Hope Valley and over Carson Pass. The mountain sits close enough for day-trip weekends, weekday training, and Tuesday and Wednesday nights under the lights.

Your home mountain, just over the pass

Kirkwood is a ski area, not a resort. A small mountain community, 2,300 acres of big-mountain terrain from a 7.8k base up to 9.8k, and an average of 354" of snow a season. It's remote, it gets deep, and from the Carson Valley it's a short drive.

KSEF runs a maximum of seven athletes per coach, so every athlete is known by name. Families from both sides of the Sierra train, race, and volunteer together, and new families are welcome from day one. #KirkwoodStrong

The Highway 88 route

From Reno and Carson City, take US-395 south to Minden. Highway 88 heads west from there, past Woodfords and through Hope Valley, then climbs over Carson Pass to Kirkwood Meadows Drive. From Minden it's about 34 miles to the turn.

Know before you go. Kirkwood sits between two passes: Carson Pass to the east and the Carson Spur to the west. From Nevada, Carson Pass is the one that matters. Caltrans closes Highway 88 over Carson Pass for snow removal and avalanche control during and after storms, and every route from the east crosses it, so there's no practical backup when it's closed. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave, carry chains, and allow extra time on storm days.

For the mountain forecast, the KSEF Snow Desk and Kirkwood Weather pages track what's coming.

The weekend, as a day trip

Team training for U8 through U16 runs Saturdays and Sundays, 0900 to 1500 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Athletes arrive dressed and ready at the group meeting point. From the Carson Valley, it's a morning drive up and home in time for dinner, with your own beds in between. Meeting points, weather calls, and changes go out through TeamSnap and email.

The weekday option

Living this close opens up the midweek side of the program.

  • Full-Time Elite Team. Monday through Friday on snow, plus one day of cross-country skiing and one afternoon of off-snow training each week, for athletes U10 and up. See the Full-Time Elite page, and talk with Kylese about how it fits your athlete's school schedule.
  • School-break weekdays. Weekday sessions during school breaks run the same hours as weekends, 0900 to 1500.
  • Holiday Training Camp. December 20, 2026 to January 4, 2027, for strong skiers ages 6 to 15. Days off are December 24 and 25 and December 31 and January 1.

Midweek outside holiday periods, Kirkwood parking is free with no reservation needed.

Night Training

Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 1630 to 1830 (4:30 to 6:30 p.m.), snow permitting. Four KSEF coaches run focused gate training under the lights, with groups set by age, class, and skill level. For Carson Valley families, it's an after-school drive up and home the same night.

  • Who: a separate paid add-on for athletes enrolled in Jr. Devo, U10, U12, U14, U16, Full-Time Elite, or Masters. It is not open to drop-ins.
  • Start date: announced through team communications.
  • Bring: the equipment for your main program and goggles suited to low light.
  • Pass: every Night Training athlete needs an Epic Pass, Tahoe Local Pass, or Kirkwood Pass. Lift tickets do not cover Night Training. Tahoe Local Pass holders lose Night Training on Tuesday, Dec 29 and Wednesday, Dec 30, 2026, both blackout dates.

Parking and carpools

Kirkwood's 2026/27 parking policy matches last season. Reservations are required in every lot on weekends and holidays until 1200 (noon). Cars with four or more people park free with a reservation, and team families need reservations too. Kirkwood's parking page has the full rules, the lot map, and the reservation link.

How families make it work

  • Keep the gear in the car. Skis, boots, helmet, goggles, layers, and chains ride along all season.
  • Share the 88 run. Two or three families, one car, a rotating driver.
  • Watch Carson Pass. On storm days, the road report decides the departure time.
  • Use the short drive. Weekend day trips, midweek sessions, and Night Training all fit when home is an hour or so away.
  • Bring the parents. The Masters program and Night Training are open to adults too.

The money side

Tuition and a season pass are the two big pieces, and the short drive keeps lodging off the list. KSEF offers payment plans and need-based scholarships, with the 2026/27 application due November 1, 2026. The Family Referral Program pays a $250 account credit or cash back for each eligible new athlete you bring to the team, up to four athletes per family. Every athlete needs an Epic Pass, Tahoe Local Pass, or Kirkwood Pass, and the FAQ covers the blackout dates. Check program dates with our Program Administrator, Dana Keith, before you buy a pass.
