From the Bay to the Wood: how a KSEF weekend works

Kirkwood sits on Highway 88 at the top of the Sierra, about three to four hours from most of the Bay Area. Bay Area families make this drive every weekend of the season. Here's the weekend plan, the drive, where families stay, and how they make it work.

Why families make the drive

Kirkwood is a ski area, not a resort. There's no shopping village or traffic light, just a small mountain community, a handful of lodges and condos, and 2,300 acres of big-mountain terrain from a 7.8k base up to 9.8k. It's remote, it gets deep, and that's the point.

KSEF feels like home up here. Groups run a maximum of seven athletes per coach, so every athlete is known by name, and coaches see the small stuff that turns a good skier into a racer. Families find each other fast: in the lodge at lunch, on the side of the course, and around the table after training. New families are welcome from day one. #KirkwoodStrong

The weekend plan

WhenWhat happens
Friday eveningThe drive up. Leaving after school and work puts Saturday morning at the mountain.
Saturday 0900 to 1500Team training (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Athletes arrive dressed and ready at the group meeting point. Coaches run the day, including the snack and lunch breaks.
Saturday eveningDinner, gear drying, a wax if the coaches ask for it, and an early night.
Sunday 0900 to 1500Team training again (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).
Sunday afternoonPickup, pack up, and the drive home. An early start down the mountain beats the worst of the Sunday traffic.

Season dates, meeting points, and weather calls go out through TeamSnap and email. School-break weekdays run the same hours, and the FAQ covers the full 2026/27 schedule. Race weekends follow the 26/27 Calendar.

The drive

Kirkwood is about 177 miles from San Francisco, and most of the Bay Area is three to four hours away depending on your start, the traffic, and the storm. Two routes get you here.

Highway 88

East through the Central Valley, up the foothills past Jackson, and over the Carson Spur to Kirkwood. Google's fastest pick from the South Bay.

Highway 50

Through Sacramento and Placerville, over Echo Summit to Meyers, south on Highway 89 over Luther Pass, then west on 88 over Carson Pass to Kirkwood. Google's fastest pick from the East Bay and Marin, and the usual backup when 88 is closed on the west side.

Know before you go. Kirkwood sits between two mountain passes, and Caltrans closes Highway 88 at the Carson Spur for snow removal and avalanche control during and after storms. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave, carry chains, and plan extra time on storm weekends. Mormon Emigrant Trail is closed in winter even though GPS often suggests it.

For the mountain forecast, the KSEF Snow Desk and Kirkwood Weather pages track what's coming.

Parking and carpools

Kirkwood's 2026/27 parking policy matches last season. Reservations are required in every lot on weekends and holidays until 1200 (noon). Cars with four or more people park free with a reservation, and team families need reservations too. Midweek, outside holiday periods, parking is free with no reservation. Kirkwood's parking page has the full rules, the lot map, and the reservation link.

Kirkwood Parking Reservations

A full car of KSEF families saves money, saves a parking spot, and splits the driving. Tell Dana where you're coming from, and she can help connect you with KSEF families on your side of the Bay.

Where families stay

In Kirkwood

The closest you can get. Kirkwood Lodging lists condos and hotel rooms in the Meadows, the Mountain Club, the Sentinels, and Timber Ridge, a short walk or shuttle from the lifts. Private condo and cabin rentals in the Kirkwood community fill out the rest.

Along Highway 88

Caples Lake Resort and a handful of cabins along the highway sit a few minutes from the base.

South Lake Tahoe

About 45 minutes away over Luther and Carson passes, with the most lodging, groceries, and restaurants. Check road conditions the night before on storm weekends.

The season rental

A season lease split between two or three families is a common setup across Tahoe. Shared costs, shared driving, a gear room that stays put all winter, and somebody to swap Saturday dinner duty with.

How families make it work

  • Pack on Thursday. Skis, boots, helmet, goggles, layers, and race gear live in one bag that goes straight to the car.
  • Trade the driving. Two families, one car, alternating drivers.
  • Split the roof. A shared condo or cabin turns a hotel bill into a cabin weekend with friends.
  • Build the weekend around training. Training runs 0900 to 1500 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), so parents have the day to ski, work from the lodge, or look at the Masters program for themselves.
  • Plan for storms. Leave early on Friday when snow is in the forecast, and keep a backup route in mind.
  • Use the family network. Returning families know the drive, the shortcuts, the best grocery stops, and which condo has room. Ask.

The money side

Tuition, a season pass, and lodging are the three big pieces. KSEF offers payment plans and need-based scholarships, with the 2026/27 application due November 1, 2026. The Family Referral Program pays a $250 account credit or cash back for each eligible new athlete you bring to the team, up to four athletes per family. Every athlete needs an Epic Pass, Tahoe Local Pass, or Kirkwood Pass, and the FAQ covers the blackout dates. Check program dates with our Program Administrator, Dana Keith, before you buy a pass.
