KSEF U16 Alpine Race Program - 4009 | FY26/27 Season
Program Overview
KSEF is a ski race team. The U16 Alpine Race Team is the top of the KSEF competitive pipeline: where years of development, discipline, and competitive experience converge into elite-level racing. Designed for athletes aged 14 and 15 who have advanced through the U14 program or demonstrate the technical proficiency and competitive drive required at this level, U16 is where athletes pursue results at the regional, Western Region, and national level across all alpine disciplines: Slalom (SL), Giant Slalom (GS), Super G (SG), and introduction to speed events.
Athletes train in small groups with a maximum 7:1 athlete-to-coach ratio. Training is comprehensive and individualized: technique and tactical refinement are the focus, with directed freeskiing, intensive gate work, and mental performance integrated into every training block. Athletes with the talent and commitment may qualify for regional and national projects. This is still KSEF, and that means we develop the whole athlete: the complete racer, the resilient competitor, and the person behind both.
At KSEF, every family belongs. And at U16, the families who have been part of this tribe for years are the ones who know it best.
Skill Prerequisites
U16 is an elite competitive race program. Athletes must arrive with extensive multi-discipline race experience, proven Far West results, and the technical and physical readiness to compete at the regional and national level. Athletes must meet the following minimum standards:
Expert-level skiing on all terrain at Kirkwood in all conditions without exception.
Proven competitive results in SL, GS, and SG at the Far West level.
Advanced proficiency in gate training at race speed across all technical and speed disciplines.
Ability to independently manage all race-day logistics: course inspection, warm-up, equipment preparation, and post-race self-assessment.
Strong competitive maturity: ability to use imagery, self-coach between runs, apply tactical feedback in real time, and perform under high-pressure environments.
Year-round commitment to physical conditioning and athletic development.
New athletes must complete a pre-season on-snow skills assessment and coach evaluation.
Athletes not yet ready for U16 should consider the KSEF U14 Alpine Race Team (ages 12 to 13). Reach out to us, and we will help you find the right path.
Why Kirkwood: The Best Mountain in the Sierra to Build a Racer
If you end up at Kirkwood, it is because you made a deliberate decision. You chose the mountain that sits at 7,800 feet in a horseshoe canyon deep in the Sierra Nevada, higher than any other ski area in Tahoe, with terrain that tilts toward challenge and snow that other resorts can only talk about. You chose the mountain where legitimately good skiing is the main event, where the terrain builds skiers instead of flattering them, and where a race team has been training athletes for over four decades.
That is exactly why it is the best place in the Sierra to develop a young racer.
Storms funnel into the horseshoe canyon from the Pacific and get stuck, swirling for days. The locals call it the K-Factor: the geographic reality that when the rest of Tahoe is waiting for snow, Kirkwood is buried in it. With 2,300 acres of skiable terrain, 2,000 feet of vertical drop, an average annual snowfall that regularly exceeds 350 inches, and a terrain mix that tilts heavily toward challenge (38% advanced, 20% expert), this mountain produces fundamentally stronger skiers and sharper racers than any resort in the region. It teaches athletes to read terrain, adapt to variable conditions, find their balance in real snow, and build the kind of independent confidence and technical foundation that translates directly to the race course.
For U16 athletes, Kirkwood is not just a training venue. It is the mountain that made them. The technical depth, the competitive resilience, and the all-mountain versatility they carry into every start gate were built here, season after season, in conditions that demand the best from every athlete who trains on this mountain.
The KSEF Community: Your Athlete's Tribe
Deep roots. Strong community. Bright futures. That is not a slogan. It is what four decades of race team families have built at Kirkwood.
At the U16 level, your athlete has likely been part of this community for years. They started in Jr. Devo or U10, grew up on this mountain, and the KSEF tribe is woven into their identity. The coaches who first put them in a gate run are still here. The teammates they raced alongside at U12 are still beside them. The families who stood together at the base of Chair 5 are now traveling together to Western Region qualifiers.
That continuity is rare in ski racing. It is not something you can buy or build overnight. It is what happens when a race team stays true to its mission for four decades. One Team. One Dream. That is how we ski, how we race, and how we show up for each other at Kirkwood.
FY26/27 Seasonal Training Mix
U16 training is the most advanced and individualized program KSEF offers. Gate work dominates, supported by tactical freeskiing and a structured conditioning program that prepares athletes for the physical demands of elite-level racing.
55 to 65% Gate Training, Race Tactics, and Discipline-Specific Technique. Advanced, high-intensity gate sessions across SL, GS, SG, and introduction to speed events. Training emphasizes technical precision at race speed, tactical adaptability, and the ability to execute under competitive pressure. Imagery and mental performance tools are integrated into training.
20 to 30% Coached Freeskiing and Technical Refinement. Directed, purposeful skiing across Kirkwood's most challenging terrain. At the U16 level, every run has a purpose.
15 to 20% Conditioning, Dryland, and Race Preparation. Year-round physical conditioning is expected. Pre-season dryland training runs September through November. In-season conditioning supports recovery and race readiness. Advanced race-day preparation, including course inspection strategy, mental performance, and imagery, is integrated throughout.
Racing Opportunities
U16 athletes compete in the Far West Race Series across SL, GS, SG, and speed disciplines. Athletes with qualifying results may advance to Western Region Championships, Tri-Divisional Championships, and national events. Athletes with exceptional results may qualify for regional and national projects.
Race travel is coordinated by coaches. Race schedules are published on the KSEF calendar. Families are responsible for transportation to race venues.
New for FY26/27: On-Mountain Race Facility
This season marks a milestone. After years of planning and investment, KSEF will be operating out of our new on-mountain race facility at Kirkwood: a permanent home on the hill that upgrades every aspect of our program and positions KSEF to compete at the highest levels in the region. For U16 athletes, it means a training environment built for the volume, intensity, and multi-discipline demands of elite-level racing. This is the infrastructure our athletes and coaches have earned.
Athlete Assessment and Progress Tracking
Every athlete is seen, coached, and challenged at the right level. New athletes complete a pre-season on-snow skills evaluation and coach assessment. Each athlete receives individualized development goals aligned with their competitive objectives, ongoing coaching feedback, a mid-season progress review, and an end-of-season assessment documenting competitive development and the pathway forward.
FY26/27 Schedule and What to Expect
The U16 season runs December through late April, with Far West racing and championship events extending into spring. Weekend training is Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. School break weekdays follow the same schedule. Pre-season dryland training runs September through November. Athletes should aim to attend at least 80% of scheduled sessions. At the U16 level, this is not a suggestion. Competitive results are built on training volume, and every session contributes directly to race-day performance.
On training days, athletes arrive fully dressed and ready to ski at the designated meeting point. Coaches organize groups and begin with a briefing. Athletes are supervised at all times, including breaks. Coaches communicate with families through KSEF's TeamSnap and direct email. Any training changes due to weather or conditions are communicated promptly.
FY26/27 Registration and Pricing - Earlybird Registration ends on May 31st.
Prices increase with each registration window and will continue to climb through November 2026. The best pricing is available now. Once a window closes, it does not reopen.
Season Pass: All athletes must hold a valid season pass for Kirkwood for all training days: Epic Pass, Epic Local Pass, Tahoe Local Pass, Tahoe Value Pass, or Kirkwood Only Pass. Lift tickets and day passes are not accepted. A season pass is a separate purchase, not included in tuition.
U.S. Ski and Snowboard Membership: All athletes must hold a current U.S. Ski and Snowboard membership in the appropriate age category for the season. This is required for participation in sanctioned race events.
Payment plans are available. Need-based financial assistance is available through KSEF, because every family belongs on this mountain. Contact the Program Administrator for pricing details, payment plan options, pass guidance, or membership questions.
Required Equipment
U16 is an elite, multi-discipline, FIS-standard race program. All equipment must receive prior approval from KSEF coaches. Families are responsible for providing:
Race Skis. Specialized racing skis for SL, GS, and SG. Both competition and training pairs are recommended.
Race Boots. Properly fitted race boots with a flex rating of 90 to 120.
Poles. Race-specific SL and GS poles equipped with pole guards.
Helmet. FIS-certified MIPS race helmet with chin guard and face guard. Required at all times.
Shin Guards. Mandatory for all SL training and competition.
Back Protector (Recommended). Recommended for added safety, particularly in speed events.
Speed Suit. A speed suit with FIS certification patch is required for racing.
Goggles. Goggles with interchangeable lenses for varied conditions.
Gloves. Durable waterproof ski gloves or mittens.
Layers. Appropriate layers for Kirkwood conditions. Dress for the mountain, not the start gate.
Ski Backpack and Water Bottle. Recommended for training sessions.
Equipment Guidance: Consult KSEF coaches before purchasing equipment. Proper fit and functionality are critical. We encourage families to explore ski swaps and used equipment markets for growing athletes.
New for FY26/27: Helly Hansen Official Team Uniform Program
For the FY26/27 season, KSEF is proud to announce an official uniform partnership with Helly Hansen. Our leadership team spent countless hours working alongside both the local and main Helly Hansen teams to design and build the best kits for our athletes and coaches: purpose-built, race-ready, and unmistakably KSEF.
When your athlete shows up at a Western Region qualifier or a Far West start gate in the new KSEF x Helly Hansen kit, they will look like they belong at the highest level. Because they do. This partnership ensures that our look, our feel, and our brand will be consistent for the foreseeable future, across every program from Jr. Devo to FIS. One Team. One Dream. And now, one kit to match.
Early Order Incentive: 10% Off Before May 31st. Purchase your full kit or individual items (jacket, pant, or mid-layer) before the May 31st deadline and receive 10% off the item or the kit. This is an introductory deal to launch the partnership, and it will not last. Prices will increase after the deadline, as will program pricing.
